“It takes the guesswork out of the equation”

An Interview with a Current OnStation User - Site Superintendent Mark Pettyjohn from Arkansas

OnStation is working to make workdays easier on the busy and complex roadwork sites all over the country. We are happy to have individuals using our app such as Mark Pettyjohn who has been adamant about how much he loves using our application. Mark is currently working at the Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas on a $190 Million runway replacement project. Given Mark’s excitement towards the app, we reached out to learn more about his experience using OnStation.

Q: How did you learn about OnStation?

“I was working with another company in Arkansas from Cleveland, OH that told me about OnStation. This was something I’ve been looking for years to find.”

Q: How many times a day do you use the app?

“(in the past 30 days) I’ve lost count. From using it on the job and dropping flags to write notes to checking stationing it is countless times every single day.”

Q: How does OnStation save time and eliminate extra work on your job?

“The biggest change is being able to use the GPS technology with the plans right on my phone. The automatic stations are super helpful when there is nothing around. It is so easy export things… write numbers and keep them handy for the next day to keep track of how the job is progressing.”

Q: Which feature is your favorite?

“The (flag and) chats are super helpful in giving brief descriptions I can see later. It is so easy to take out my phone and look at where I am with context to the project within seconds. All with no files or hassle since it is all from my phone that I carry on me all the time. At the end of the day by using the app for data reporting out in the field I save and export then BOOM - it's done!”

Q: How was a field task done before you had OnStation?

“Getting the excavator onto the jobsite I need the plans, need to know where to go, so we hunt down the surveyor, get the station for this and for that, they are busy so that can take some time, get all that back to the excavator and we can go.  With OnStation, we have the station right on our phone, so it takes the mess out it and it’s instant!”

Q: What additional features would you like to see in OnStation?

“Maybe a calendar to communicate plans and help the team know what they are working on each day.  A measurement tool would be nice too – flag a point and measure to another flag.”

When you implement OnStation on all of your projects you’re taking the guess work out of it, it’s much easier to document what is happening in the field and the export options will save tons of time and money when you close out the job.  Capture location-based data when it is created…better documentation leads to better outcomes!

We are happy to listen to our users and learn from them the best we can to make this app better every day. Thank you to Mark for taking the time to speak with us and we hope that the rest of your project is made easier with OnStation.
